First time I saw it, it made me go who the hell would buy a doorbell that had to be recharged? I have an Arlo video doorbell and it connected directly to the existing wiring. I had to add a little device on the 24v transformer inside the chime upstairs, but that's it. No batteries, no bullshit. I just wish the notifications would hit my phone in real time. The option to talk through the doorbell is worthless bc it's like 5-10 seconds delayed. Doesn't matter if I'm at home on WiFi or out somewhere on cellular

But now I get it - places that never had a doorbell, or rentals/apartments where you can't make permanent modifications, so you make do with what you can. I saw some that use solar to keep itself charged which may be a little more ugly or messy, but at least it's always full... If solar is even an option (probably not if your door is interior or always in shade)

Subscriptions suck, but Ring + their service = real time messages, including crap like, “Someone passed in front of your Ring camera. It looks like they are walking a dog.” and stuff like that.

Arlo has near real time notifications like that with their subscription too. Animal detected, package detected, person, vehicle, etc etc and you can toggle each of them on/off so it's not spamming you with vehicle notifications just because you live on a busy street. For my purposes it's fine
