You could also burn hydrazine over a catalyst- that's something he did in the Martian that is actual science. And yeah the explosion danger is real too. Biggest lie in the Martian is the wind. The atmosphere there is too thin, so even if it was blowing at 100kmh you'd probably barely even feel it even if you weren't wearing a suit. So no chance it could tip over a huge, heavy rocket
