Please share some wisdom. I miss the era where google wasn't a dumpster fire. I remember "good at googling" used to be a skill worthy of being written in a CV. Any "good enough" search engine would be better than the current trash, but so far i'm not having much success finding a good one.

Duck duck go is decent. Say what you will about their browser, but brave search is good and their image search has gotten much better recently. The things I like about brave search ai is that if it isn't sure, it just doesn't show the AI results at all.

Good to know! I'll take a look at brave search. I already use duckduckgo and while it's better than currwnt google it's far from being good. It's incresible how fast the internet went from cool new tech to shitty unavoidable product placement machine.

The thing is that Google has an AI mode, so why do I still get the AI answer even if I just did a normal search? When I just want the link to a page, why do I have to scroll past an explanation of what the page is?

It's kind of useful at times, but I think older google had a similar lever of accessibility to information if the few first answers AND a good search engine. Think about it for a minute: google used to be an excellent search engine. Excellent.

Having it as an option is fine, having it as the default that you cannot turn off is not fine. Many smaller websites are losing traffic and therefore revenue because google is now showing the ai answer instead of the top links. Some of those are having to shut down. If this continues, it will result in good, authoritative sources disappearing, and being replaced by ai hallucinations from other sites that are just pumping out 'content' without any of it being checked by humans.

Absolutely, and it sucks. I used to help on stack overflow when AI started to be an issue. I remember reviewing weird answers that looked right, sounded right, were authoritative, but when you really looked at the code it was full un flaws that were difficult to understant (when assuming that it was a human that knows his shit and is trying to help). Unckecked, I am convinced that this is the fast lane to idiocraty.
